This page covers how Smart Funnel is evaluated and how it behaves, alongside the rules and edge cases that decide whether a shopper sees it. For how to turn it on and configure it, see the Smart funnel guide.

Evaluation order (Priority 0)

Smart Funnel is evaluated at Priority 0. If a shopper meets the eligibility criteria, the Smart Funnel offer is shown before any manual funnels. If a shopper sees a Smart Funnel post-purchase offer, manual funnel post-purchase offers are suppressed by this priority rule. (Thank You Page widgets are handled separately, see Thank You Page behaviour below.) Smart Funnel pulls product recommendations from your selected Product Recommendation Tool, configured under Settings → Automatic upsells. Under Excluded products on the same page, you can exclude collections: products from those collections aren’t used as AI recommendations or as the most or least expensive item in the order. Recommendations also build on each other through the funnel. The first upsell and its downsell are based on the original order. After that, each upsell’s first product seeds the next level: the second upsell and its downsell build on the first upsell’s product, and the third upsell builds on the second upsell’s product. If an earlier upsell is skipped, the next level goes back to the original order. So the products a shopper sees later in the funnel depend on what they were shown first. When your highlighted product is the first product in an upsell, it becomes the basis for the AI’s recommendations at the next level.

Highlighted product

A highlighted product sets a preference, not a guarantee. Smart Funnel favors it when it builds offers, but how it appears depends on the offer:
  • Offers with a specific product slot (single-product, multi-product, and box). Your highlighted product fills every specific product slot, and the offer’s other slots are filled as usual. In a single-product offer built on a specific product, your highlighted product is the offer.
  • Offers built from AI picks, collections, or the original order. Smart Funnel tests different offer layouts to find what converts best. Layouts whose products all come from AI recommendations, collections, or the shopper’s original order (such as the most or least expensive item in it) have no slot for a highlighted product, so they never show it. Expect your highlighted product in a share of your offers rather than in all of them.
Collection exclusions under Settings → Automatic upsells apply to the products Smart Funnel picks for you, not to your highlighted product. A highlighted product that sits in an excluded collection can still be offered.

When your highlighted product is not shown

It is out of stock. Smart Funnel checks the product’s availability for each order. If none of its variants are available for sale at that moment, Smart Funnel falls back to AI recommendations in every highlighted product slot for that entire order, rather than showing an unavailable item. Keeping the product in stock is the most effective way to keep it in rotation. The shopper already bought it. Some offers skip your highlighted product when the shopper already has it in their order. A single-product offer is skipped; an offer with several products usually shows the others instead.

Discount requirements

For best performance, set a non-zero Max Discount, since the templates do not dynamically adjust based on the discount field value. A 0% Max Discount is allowed, but for 0% discount offers a manual funnel is generally a better fit. This may be improved in the future. Box offers follow the same discount rules as multi-product offers: their percentage discounts, including tier discounts, scale with your Max Discount.

Thank You Page behaviour

Smart Funnel governs post-purchase upsells only and does not natively support Thank You Page (TYP) upsells. Because of this, when TYP widgets are eligible to display, the system automatically references the first applicable manual funnel that contains TYP upsells. Only the TYP widgets from that funnel are displayed, even though the post-purchase offers from that funnel are not shown earlier in the customer journey. So if a shopper sees a Smart Funnel post-purchase offer, manual funnel post-purchase offers are suppressed, but TYP widgets may still appear based on manual funnel eligibility. To keep serving TYP widgets, run at least one manual funnel that contains them alongside Smart Funnel.

English-only display

Smart Funnel content is currently available in English only. Delivery is automatically restricted to shoppers who check out with an English locale. The check is on the customer’s checkout locale, not your store’s default language. If a significant portion of your audience speaks other languages, continue using manual funnels with locale-based triggers to serve those shoppers. Support for additional languages is on the roadmap.

Eligibility and low or zero visits

If your Smart Funnel is active and has allocated traffic but is getting very few or no post-purchase visits, an info icon (!) appears on the Smart Funnel banner. Clicking it scrolls to and expands the eligibility details panel at the bottom of the Funnels page.
Eligibility insights are not available on every store yet. If you don’t see the info icon, contact support and we can look into low or zero visits with you.
The eligibility insights icon only appears when viewing a date range of 30 days or longer. Short or custom date ranges don’t provide enough data to diagnose a problem.
The icon appears when:
  • Your Smart Funnel is active with traffic allocated, and
  • Post-purchase visits are 0 (any traffic allocation), or
  • Post-purchase visits are fewer than 10 with 50% or more of traffic allocated to the Smart Funnel
When you open the eligibility details panel, it lists the most likely causes:
  • Shopify eligibility limits (not fixable). Some orders can’t show one-click post-purchase offers, for example orders paid with Apple Pay or Google Pay. This is a Shopify platform restriction. The panel links to Shopify’s limitations documentation.
  • Excluded collections (fixable). If you’ve excluded collections from product recommendations in Settings → Automatic upsells, and every AI-recommended product falls within those excluded collections, Smart Funnel skips the offer entirely. The panel shows how many collections you’ve excluded and links directly to your exclusion settings.
  • “Skip products in original order” combined with exclusions (fixable). If you have both “Skip products in original order” enabled and excluded collections configured, Smart Funnel may skip offers when every recommended product is filtered out by one or both rules. The panel links to your Smart Funnel settings so you can adjust these options.
