Important notes
- One subscription change per post-purchase flow. Only one subscription offer can be accepted per post-purchase page. If your funnel has multiple subscription-related steps, only the first accepted offer goes through. The funnel editor warns when it detects this conflict.
- Subscriptions only. This feature only fires when the customer’s order contains the subscription version of the eligible product. It will not fire for one-time purchases of the same product.
- Frequency on replacements. When using Replace with a different product, the new item inherits the original subscription’s frequency unless you also pick Both – change frequency and replace product.
- Multi-product upsells. Subscription upgrade settings are configured per product. If you are offering multiple products in one upsell, configure each individually.
- Recurring discount applies to every future renewal. Unlike a one-time discount, this stays in effect on every renewal of the upgraded subscription.
- Prepaid conversion with partial credit is not supported. If a customer already paid for part of a prepaid cycle, Aftersell cannot pro-rate the remaining shipments, and the original subscription is never refunded. On Recharge, converting a subscription to a prepaid plan cancels the original and recreates it on the new plan; if the upgrade is set to start immediately, Aftersell also creates a single-charge $0 bridge subscription to cover the deliveries the customer has already paid for, so nothing is dropped between the old cycle and the new plan’s first charge. A replacement that does not move the customer onto a prepaid plan is applied to the existing subscription in place.
Add-item upgrades
The Add another subscribable item to subscription type has its own constraints:- No discounts. Add-item offers do not support a first-order or recurring discount. The recurring-discount section is hidden on this type; the First-order discount field in Step 4 still appears but is always saved as
0. Set the price you want on the Step 4 offer product instead. - Not supported on prepaid Skio or Loop subscriptions, and only Skio is validated. Skio rejects adding a recurring line to a prepaid subscription; Aftersell blocks the offer at save time when every selling plan on the trigger variant is prepaid, and warns when only some are. The Loop integration does not handle prepaid either, but it is not covered by that save-time check — the offer saves and fails on accept instead.
- Failed calls are retried. Add-item is part of the automatic retry workflow; a per-provider dedupe guard keeps a replay from adding the item twice. Contact support only if the failure is reported as needing manual reconciliation.
- Adding an item the customer already subscribes to increases that line’s quantity instead of creating a second line.
- Recharge creates a second subscription rather than adding a line, because it has no add-a-line API. The customer sees two subscriptions on a matching cadence in their portal.
Subscription upsells on subscription orders
Shopify does not allow a post-purchase upsell to add a subscription to an order that already contains one. With Recharge, Skio, or Loop connected, Aftersell creates the new subscription in your provider instead, so subscription offers still reach existing subscribers. Notes and constraints:- A provider connection is required. Without one, subscription offers on subscription orders are dropped (subscription-only products) or downgraded to one-time.
- Prepaid plans are unavailable on Loop. Loop cannot create prepaid subscriptions through this integration, so prepaid plans are hidden from the offer on Loop stores.
- The customer ends up with two independent subscriptions, each managed separately in the provider portal.
- This does not apply to Subscription Upgrade offers, which modify the existing subscription rather than adding a new one.
