How it works
When you add a spend threshold upsell to your checkout, the system:- Calculates the gap - Determines how much more the customer needs to spend (or how many more items they need) to reach the reward threshold
- Selects the best product - Chooses from your configured product pool based on the gap:
- If the customer is already qualified for the reward, shows the most expensive product to maximize revenue
- If the reward is based on item count, shows the cheapest product to reduce friction (any product adds 1 item)
- If the reward is based on cart total, shows the cheapest product that closes the gap, or the most expensive product if no single product can close the gap
- Applies discounts - If you’ve configured a discount for the upsell, the system factors that into the product selection
Requirements
To use spend threshold upsells, you need:- Rewards bar enabled - The spend threshold feature requires an active rewards bar in your checkout
- Reward threshold configured - Set up your reward goal (cart total or item count) in the rewards bar settings
- Product pool configured - Choose which products the system can recommend (all products, specific collection, or specific products)
Setting up spend threshold upsells
Step 1: Enable the rewards bar
- Open your Checkout editor in Aftersell
- Add or enable the Rewards widget
- Configure your reward threshold:
- Choose Order Value or Item Count as the reward basis
- Set the minimum amount or item count
- Customize the reward bar text and appearance
Step 2: Add a spend threshold upsell
- In your Upsell widget, click Add product
- Select Spend threshold from the product type options
- Configure your product pool:
- All products - System chooses from all available products in your store
- Specific collection - System chooses from products in a selected collection
- Specific products - System chooses from a list of products you select
Step 3: Configure discounts (optional)
You can add a discount to your spend threshold upsell just like any other upsell product:- Click Add discount on the upsell offer
- Choose to Pick existing or Create new discount
- The system will factor the discount into product selection, showing products at their discounted price when calculating which product best closes the gap
Best practices
- Match your product pool to your reward - If offering free shipping, consider featuring products that complement common purchases
- Use collections strategically - Create a hidden collection of products that work well as threshold-closing items
- Test different configurations - Try different product pools to see what drives the best conversion rates
- Combine with other upsells - Use spend threshold upsells alongside specific product upsells for a comprehensive strategy
- Monitor performance - Check your analytics to see which products are most frequently added through spend threshold upsells
Troubleshooting
Spend threshold upsells not showing
If your spend threshold upsells aren’t appearing:- Check rewards bar status - Ensure the rewards bar is enabled in your checkout
- Verify product availability - Make sure products in your pool are in stock and available
- Review triggers - Confirm your upsell widget triggers are configured correctly
- Check product pool - Ensure your selected collection or products aren’t empty
Wrong products being recommended
If the system is recommending unexpected products:- Review your product pool - Check which products are included in your collection or product list
- Verify pricing - Ensure product prices are correct in Shopify
- Check discount configuration - If using discounts, verify they’re applying correctly
- Consider cart contents - The system excludes products already in the cart
